Owlshead & Alma Beach

Alma beach is a great beach for rock hounding. When the tide is out you can walk out to a large sandbar which still holds back a fairly large tidal pool, you can get more than your feet wet here. In the background of the photo at right you can see Owls head, a high rock face, here the odd fossil can be viewed by interested visitors. But watch yourself,  when the tide starts to come in, keep your eye on where you are or you might get caught with more water than you know what to do with.

Salmon River

The Upper Salmon river runs down from the highlands to a beautiful grassland area just at the entrance to the park.  From the headquarters campground in the park, a trail leads you to an area of the river that's great for swimming. Other trails like "The Black Hole", "Third Vault Falls" and "The Forks" take you to the upper areas of the river where it is joined by the Forty-Five river and other brooks. Kayaking the Grasslands

If you like you can go Kayaking up the river, this scene was captured at high tide. At low tide (above) you'd better have wheels on your kayak for this trip, as you'll be sitting "low and dry". Boating is also available in the park at Bennett Lake with canoes, kayak and even a small sailboat, there's a nice island to go to and stop for a swim.
